So, our showreel came out for 2012 on Friday and we’ve had an incredible response so far!
I wanted to achieve two main things from this years showreel. Firstly I wanted to show people of course the quality of our camera work and secondly I wanted to create something that people actually connect with to show that it is in fact possible to make a “corporate” showreel that could have an emotional impact.
Good marketing for me is about capturing moments or ideas that make the audience feel something about what you do or who you are. Just like literature or art or music, if your message is strong enough people will buy it, and I think that often we over complicate the messages we’re trying to convey. For example. If you’re trying to sell a Theme Park for a day out, what is it that you’re really selling? A “family day out” might reach out to parents, but surely the idea of “fun” is something everyone regardless of age can connect with. Thompson did a great job of this with their ad “Time for a Holiday?”
In our showreel, we’re selling the idea of good memories. Everyone has memories, and what we’re saying as a brand is we’re the ones who will capture those for you in a timeless way. Good memories as a message has to be a powerful one because subconsciously although people are watching our work, they’re sifting through their own memories and adding their own positive feelings to it as they go.
What I think we’ve achieved more than anything else with this showreel has been showing people that anything, even simple things, can be beautiful. Admittedly a lot of the footage came from our trips with Hay Festival which were very visual, but I believe you can find visual stuff anywhere, you just have to be open to looking at things in a different way. For example some of the shots were taken in a cow shed in Pontypridd (the ballet dancer) in a field in Cardiff (little lad on his tractor), in a classroom in Cardiff and a steel works in Cardiff Bay & all bar two shots in the whole thing were for corporate videos.
Anyway, as with every blog post I’ve ever written, I’ve totally forgotten my point. I think it’s that when you want video, or think about video, think about getting a company in who will know what message you need to focus on to get that feeling across. Don’t make messages complicated, make them real.
What a terrible last paragraph. I apologise.
Cheers,
Ben
This is how EVERYONE should be doing video. I’ve been saying for years now that what makes a great corporate video is a great story and man have GE nailed it !
I think this video encapsulates how everyone should be thinking about their business, if you are a part of a business, you are part of something more. The amount of people who don’t realise what they have right in front of them is unbelievable and I think this is the future for online video.
This video is feel good, it’s epic, it has great story, acts as a sales, recruitment and presentation piece, and it’s less than 3 minutes long.
If you’re part of a business, or trying to market a company, this is what you should be thinking about !
Romesh from long wave sent me a link to this. Amazing what you can do, and relatively simply too !
My good buddy James Cuff showed me this. What an amazing way to spend an ad budget. Nike, pick me !
this is what video should be about, great music, great story…powerful piece

Films to see
There’s been some great blogging around the Oscars this year, and it’s the discussion that the Oscars promote which is always my favourite part.
From this list I’ve seen The Tsunami and the Cherry Blossom and it was wonderful, perhaps all the others are worth a watch too !
Here’s the video we shot in Colombia 3 weeks ago. Enjoy !
great idea, beautifully executed.
